What happens when love becomes an experiment?
In Mozart’s razor-sharp comedy Così fan tutte (or The School for Lovers), two young officers believe in their fiancées’ perfect fidelity, until a cynical philosopher proposes a wager to prove otherwise. They return in disguise, targeting each other’s fiancées under a controlled experiment in temptation. As the lovers unknowingly pursue one another under false pretenses, what begins as a playful bet spirals into something far more unsettling, and revealing.
Beneath its elegant wit and sparkling score lies one of Mozart’s most provocative works. Così fan tutte is not simply a farce about romantic mix-ups; it is a searching meditation on human nature, trust, and epistemology. With disarming humor and emotional precision, the opera asks uncomfortable questions: Are we as constant as we believe? Is love a matter of principle or circumstance? And what do we really discover when we test the people we trust most?
Mozart’s music captures every shade of this emotional experiment. Written in 1790, one year before Mozart's death, Così fan tutte stands at the height of his collaboration with Da Ponte (alongside Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni).
